Brilliant surgeon Dr. John Thackery takes over as Chief of Surgery at the struggling Knickerbocker Hospital following his mentor’s suicide. He immediately butts heads with Dr. Algernon Edwards, a black, Harvard-educated surgeon who is forced to treat patients in a segregated basement clinic. Thackery relies heavily on cocaine to manage the stress of experimental operations and high mortality rates.
