Heath is adopted into the Earnshaw family, who live in a lighthouse called "The Heights". He and daughter Cate (Erika Christensen) fall in love, but their romance is complicated by her desire for a different life and the animosity of her brother, Hendrix (Johnny Whitworth). After their father dies, Hendrix drives Heath away. Cate has a car accident and is rescued by wealthy neighbor Edward (Christopher Masterson) whom she eventually marries.
