Set during the turbulent Edo period, the film follows Kenji, a masterless and highly skilled Rōnin (lone samurai) haunted by the dishonorable end of his former lord. Seeking to escape his past and his reputation, Kenji wanders the countryside, only to become entangled in a conflict ravaging a small, defenseless village threatened by a brutal band of corrupt officials and ruthless bandits. Reluctantly, Kenji agrees to protect the villagers, leading to spectacular, visceral sword battles that test his fading morality and his commitment to the true, honorable path of the warrior.
