Born Winona Laura Horowitz on October 29, 1971, in Winona County, Minnesota, Ryder grew up in a commune in Northern California without electricity for a time. At age 12, she enrolled in acting classes at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. She made her film debut in the 1986 film Lucas.
