Born on July 17, 1969, in Winton, Queensland, Australia, Clarke grew up in a rural area where his father worked as a sheep shearer. He initially began studying law but left before completing his degree to pursue acting, training at the Sydney Actor\'s Studio and later the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, from which he graduated in 1994.
